MLK-Another Fun Event For Us!

We battled the snow and drove on the icy road of US-20 to gain some experience as we prepare for our two big tournaments this year; CFS Regional Feb. 11th and OSCF States in Seaside.  Twelve players from Metzger and former Mustang, Cody Tanz took on some tough competition in Corvallis Monday.  Many players brought back trophies for strong play and a couple medals.  Contrats to Elisa Rosas for her "Best Notation" award , you all should be recording your games!  GREAT JOB Elisa!

Road to Seaside

Every year that I have coached a chess team I have more players with more of an interest in tournaments.
So to make it easier for you to travel the road to the State Championships in Seaside April 27-28 here is a list of upcoming events:

NW Chess Calendar
January 16th - MLK in Corvallis

Feburary 25th - Whitford/Cooper Mountain at Whitford MS in Beaverton

Every Friday Chess Odyssy hosts "Friday Night Quads" from 6:30-10:00.  I've never been because I usually play hockey on Fridays but these are Qualifiers as well.  More information the NW Calendar.

There are a couple of tournaments that are still yet to be posted; President's Day tournament in Tigard and The Grant Grizz in Salem March 17th.

We will also be competing in the Chess For Success Regional Feburary 11th in Region 9 at Middleton Elem. in Sherwood.  Only 10 players from each school are allowed.
Here is the confusing part...ready?  There are two chess organizations for scholastic players Chess For Success(CFS) which holds a regional and state tournament.  This is a small organization that reaches out to schools to help them start clubs.  The second is the Oregon Scholastic Chess Federation(OSCF).  This is the Granddaddy of them all!  The OSCF offers many more tournaments and playing opportunities for kids and has way better awards and more of them.  The OSCF was founded based on how bad CFS is.  But their team state tournament is fun so I like to compete for a chance to go.

So there you have it!  Go to OSCF's website for all information Chess.  It's a great site with a ton of resourses.

Next Stop-MLK Tournament in Corvallis

January 16th a group of us will be heading down to Corvallis for the annual Martin Luther King Day Tournament held by a great Tournament Director and president of the OSCF, Dan Dalthrop.  I was at this tournament a few years ago and it is a fun event with some fun awards that include best notation and best hand shake.

Welcome to our New Chess Club

From now on I will be in contact with you through this blogger site.  You will be updated on upcoming tournaments and club news.  A good friend of mine has invited us to use his blogger site at Happey Valley and use some puzzles that he post for his club.  Your homework is to be printed off and turned in each week that it's assigned.  Feel free to comment and post pictures here!
