Whitford/Cooper Mtn Tournament

The team did well once again but this time in Beaverton for the toughest qualifier of the year.  The Whitford Cooper Mtn tournament has been a magnet for the area's best players for several years now.

Remember 4-5th grade THIS WEEK ONLY we will be meeting TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY AND THURDAY at 7:15 for some extra practice time.

Time: Friday, March 16, 2012
10:00am – approximately 4:30pm.

Pre-Registration ONLY: To register, send your name/age, grade/school, and your NWSRS ID) to happyvalleychess@gmail.com with subject line: "HV Chess K-8 Championships". Registration will close on Thursday, March 15 at 7:00 pm. We will limit the player numbers to 80. You can check your ID here: http://myrating.chess4life.com/nwsrs_players/search

Check in: 8:00-9:30am. If you are late, you still can play starting with round 2. You don't have to play all the rounds. In case you decide not to play in a round, please inform the Tournament Director ahead of time. Zero points for byes.

Cost: $20.00 payable on site

Description: Tournaments are a great way to help players apply knowledge and gain necessary practical skills to achieve success. This tournament will be held Swiss style, and will take approximately 5 hours.

Eligibility/Sections: This tournament is NWSRS rated and open to any kids up to grade 8. Players will be group in the following sections: K-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8. The kids participating for the first time in a chess tournament (no previous chess ratings) will have their own sections: Novice K-4 and Novice 5-8. Organizers reserve the right to make smaller adjustments to sections format.

Rounds/Times: Five rounds
Game/30 (25/5 for time-delay clocks)

Awards: Trophies for top 3 players in each section! Medals for anyone who has at least 2.5 points and no trophy. Chess gift for everyone with 2 points or less. Computer generated tie-breakers will be used to decide top 3.

** An adult must accompany all the participants under 12 years old. If the child is not supervised they will be forfeited and asked to leave the tournament.

Team Prepares for State!

5 Members are getting ready for the Team State Championship March 2nd and 3 will be taking on the state's top players March 3 for the Individual Championships.  If you didn't make this tournament don't worry, Seaside is still an option and the best tournament of the year.

Onward to State!!

Saturday was a big day for our Chess Club and our school.  The team scored 16 points at the CFS Regional Tournament to place 2nd and earn a spot at the State Championships at the Portland Convention Center March 2nd!

Way to go Mustangs!!

I also would like to congratulate Lawson Dietz, Elias Erickson and Michael O'Neal for earning a trip to the Individual State Championships March 3rd.  Lawson had a perfect score and beating the top ranked player in the tournament.

Some parents have asked about ordering some T-Shirts.  I would love to order some for you.  If you would like to order a shirt, let me know what size and I will place an order.  The shirt might cost between $8-10, not sure but will find out.

Upcoming Events

*CFS Regional Championships in Sherwood this Saturday, the 11th!  All members can come and play chess but only the 10 players selected can play in the Regional tournament.  All others will be allowed to play a Friendly Tournament just for fun.  Please arrive no later than 8:30.
