Seaside Excellence!

As most of you know the Metzger Chess Club had 14 players qualify for the Scholastic Chess Federation’s Individual State Championships Friday and Saturday in Seaside.  The players did an amazing job representing our school and played like champions.  Each player performed well and every one of them won a medal or trophy in their division.   This is an outstanding accomplishment for our kids.

Some tournament highlights included Elias Erickson’s 2nd place finish in the Elementary Advanced section.  Elias played great, taking down two of the top three players in his division and only losing 1 match.  He played games that are timed with a clock and had to notate every move.  This is a lot for one player and to maintain that level of focus throughout an eight hour day is impressive.  Oh and did I mention that this was his first time playing in this division all year?

Another huge accomplishment was from Hunter Dietz.  Hunter won a sportsmanship award called the “Kathryn Rose Taylor Order of the Knights” award.  Only 5 players out of the 300 represented are given this award each year!  It is a huge honor that is named after the founder of the Chess Federation.   Hunter will have his name listed on the OSCF website permanently and will go into the Order of the Knights Hall of Fame!  He also received a really cool trophy and certificate.
